Messages

Both taxpayers and tax professionals can easily initiate message threads in TaxCaddy. Messages can either be general or attached to a specific document (or the questionnaire). Taxpayers receive a notification whenever they receive a new message, and tax professionals can control their notification settings. You can export any message thread to the client’s workpaper binder as a tax document.

Desktop

Both taxpayers and tax professionals see a Messages tab in the top navigation bar of the taxpayer’s TaxCaddy profile.

Inside the Messages tab, the left-hand panel displays a list of all message threads associated with the active tax year in the client’s account. The center panel is the message composition area. Threads with new, unread messages display a small red notification icon with the number of unread messages. Both taxpayers and tax professionals can start a new general message thread by clicking the + symbol in the Message Threads panel.

In the upper righthand corner of the center panel, tax professionals will see the option to File to Tax Documents. This converts the message thread in its current state into a tax document that can export to SPbinder.

TaxCaddy app

In the TaxCaddy app, the Messages tab can be found in the bottom navigation bar (iOS) or the expandable left navigation menu (Android).

In both mobile operating systems, taxpayers can initiate a new general message thread by tapping the + icon in the bottom right corner.

Mobile message threads resemble a traditional text message exchange.

SurePrep App for Tax Professionals

When you log into the SurePrep App for Tax Professionals, you will see an Overview screen that displays a list of clients you follow. If there are unread messages associated with any of these clients, they will float to the top and display a red alert icon.

Tapping a client’s name launches the mobile Messages tab. Here, you’ll see all message threads associated with the active tax year in the client’s account. You can open and reply to existing message threads, or click the + symbol in the lower right to create a new general message thread.

Sometimes, the taxpayer or tax professional needs to send a message that pertains to a specific document or the questionnaire. TaxCaddy makes it easy to associate message threads with specific items.

Desktop

In the desktop version of TaxCaddy, there is a messaging panel on the right-hand side of the Document Viewer for all tax documents, as well as the questionnaire. Both taxpayers and tax professionals can initiate or reply to messages in this panel.

The full message history will display in this panel whenever the taxpayer or tax professional opens the associated document.

In addition to displaying in the messaging panel, all message threads associated with specific documents appear in the Message Threads panel in the Messages tab of a TaxCaddy user’s profile. A direct, clickable link to the document in question—or the questionnaire—automatically appears in the initial message.

TaxCaddy app

The messages icon appears in the top right corner of all documents and the questionnaire in both the iOS and Android versions of the TaxCaddy app. Tapping the icon launches a message composer. TaxCaddy automatically generates a direct link to the document in question in the initial message of the thread.

SurePrep App for Tax Professionals

If a message thread is associated with a specific document, a document type icon will appear in the upper right-hand corner of the messages screen. Tapping this icon launches the associated document in the mobile Document Viewer.
